"John Packer Limited are continuing to develop their own JP branded range of trumpets and once again it has been a real pleasure to review the latest addition. There was a real sense of excitement when the packing case was delivered to my door just a few days ago. Once I had thrown out the protective bubble wrap and shredded paper I began to get that sense of excitement that we all have when given the opportunity to blow some new for the first time. The JP D and E Flat trumpet comes in a sturdy canvas covered, moulded double case with a comfortable handle, carry straps and zip fasteners. There is also an outside pocket suitable for music. The trumpet is cradled on well padded inserts and sits in an upright position. Upon opening the case the trumpet is a fixed bell style D/ Eflat (similar to Yamaha YTR 6610S) with two complete sets of slides (four in each set) and a mouthpiece. The trumpet has an exceptionally high quality finish with Amado style water keys, hexagonal valve tops and bottoms and is beautifully finished in a fine silky silver plate. The overall look is stylish and uncomplicated. I slotted in my mouthpiece! The blow was even and with a little more resistance than I was expecting, but the sound from this little trumpet is strong, well centred and sweet, rather reminiscent of a long lost and lamented pre war English Besson that I sold to keep the wolf from the door during my student years. The intonation on both the D and E flat slides is extremely good, and in my view, better than most of its fixed bell and tuning bell competitors, though perhaps it doesnt have the Umpppph that the latter has when required in a symphony orchestra setting. This instrument would be great for the chamber orchestra trumpet player, and particularly for the repertoire of Handel and Purcell.
Once again John Packer have delivered the possibility of owning an extremely good quality instrument at a price around half that of similar competitors. They will be flying off the shelves!"

"Thank you for letting us test drive the new D/Eb trumpet. We have found it to be a well made and finished instrument of a quality that belies its asking price. The trumpet we tried blew pretty well with one or two weaknesses - notably a flat D & E/Eb and a sharp top G, but this is not inconsistent with most Eb's costing two or three times the price. The instrument is very easy to play and the sound quality is bright and clear which would suit chamber music, but would possibly be difficult in a large symphony orchestra, particularly in very loud passages (a heavier bell might help here). We feel the instrument to be ideal for players at advanced student level and an excellent choice as a 'first Eb trumpet'. Overall the trumpet is probably on a par with the Yamaha short model Eb/D which costs twice the price. So well done
